Over 150 family members and children gathered at Coalition For Kids on Tuesday, September 28th for a Family STEM night hosted by Jason Lindsey from Hooked on Science. Lindsey is an award-winning science educator, author, meteorologist, and one of only seven STEM Certified Master Trainers in America. He performs hands-on science experiments at hundreds of schools and community events each year. His goal is to see students develop a long-term interest in science and math and become inquisitive about the world around them.

After enjoying a meal together provided by C4K, Jason Lindsey, aka Mr. Science, took center stage engaging families with an action filled science show. He demonstrated a fire rocket bottle, how matter can turn from a foam to a solid, and many other exciting experiments. Afterwards, the families constructed some of their own masterpieces using a variety of STEM manipulatives and building toys.

Coalition organized the event to give families a fun, free night out with their kids where they could spend time together, learn something new, and spark students’ interest in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Coalition strives to incorporate these activities into their after-school programs on a daily basis to challenge and engage students.
Jordan Spain, Director of Program Development, said it was a great evening of learning for everyone – both students and parents. “STEM activities not only give students ideas of a future in the workplace, but help with their day to day knowledge and success in the classroom,” Jordan said. “With the growing importance and infusion of STEM into seemingly everything, we wanted to expose parents to what STEM is really all about.”
