History
The
Coalition began as a grassroots effort in 1998 when area business leaders
and concerned citizens created the Coalition for Kids, Inc. to help children
and youth make better choices and have a better "balanced life". Our 9,700
square foot community center called "The Rock" was purchased, renovated, and
donated by concerned local business owners. The Grand Opening was held February
27, 1999 (with over 500 in attendance) marking the beginning of our endeavor
to make the concept of changing the lives of children a reality.
The Rock Community Center is now the vibrant hub of this east Johnson City
neighborhood offering trust and hope to the children and youth. The neighborhood
consists of lower-income families, having a high percentage of single parent
households. With over 530 children within a one mile radius of the Rock, we
are making a powerful impact in these young lives. The changes we have brought
to our community are exciting and gratifying.
